Evgeny Grigorievich Avvakumov was born on December 26, 1934, Kirov, Russia. He was laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of science (1993) and an Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation (2004). Professor Avvakumov graduated from Saint Petersburg (Leningrad during the Soviet era) University in 1957. In 1965 he defended his Ph.D. thesis on "Investigation of the processes of crystallization of nitric acid salts from melts", and in 1987 defended the doctoral dissertation in Chemical Sciences on "Mechanical activation of solid-phase reactions in inorganic systems". His professional work started in 1956, before he graduated, as a senior laboratory assistant, junior researcher of the Institute of Chemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS). He stayed there until 1968 when he became a Senior Researcher of the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion, SB RAS. From 1975 until 1987 he was a Senior Researcher in the Institute of Solid State Chemistry and Mechanochemistry, SB RAS, and in 1988 moved up to the Head of the Laboratory of Mechanochemical Reactions. In 2004 Dr. Avvakumov is becoming the Chief Researcher of the Institute of Solid State Chemistry and Mechanochemistry, SB RAS, and stayed there until his retirement in 2015.
Evgeny Avvakumov had many findings, some of them being that he proposed a new method for crystallization purification of salts by applying vigorous stirring in a rotating container, showed that mechanical activation of solids in grinding devices leads not only to a change in the particle size, but is a complex process, including the formation of defects, changes in the composition and structure of solids. He also established a fundamental difference between solid-solid mechanochemical reactions from solid-liquid, solid-gas reactions, proposed a new version of mechanochemical synthesis, which is based on the use of hydrated compounds and was named as "soft mechanochemical synthesis".
Dr. Avvakumov is the author of 306 scientific publications, 42 inventions. He is the Recipient of the Prize of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences N.V. Melnikov (2013). Included in the top 100 specialists in the field of chemistry and chemical technology (2017) with a citation index over 2200.
