Prof. Michael R. Notis was born in 1939, in New York, USA.
He graduated from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa. USA, where he obtained his M.Sc. in1960 and 1963, and his Ph.D. in 1969. He began his carrier an engineer for Grumman
Aircraft, where he worked on NASA's Apollo program and continued as a professor of materials science at Lehigh University for nearly 45 years.
His contribution to this field is enormous, and some of his achievements are Final stage pressure sintering of oxide by deformation mechanism maps; Deformation mechanism mapping in different materials processing methods; The influence of segregation in ceramic oxides on grain boundary mobility; Inversion domain boundaries in non-oxide ceramics, etc.
In recent years, he has also been dedicated to research in the field of archaeometry:
X-Ray, HRTEM, and Synchrotron applications in archaeometallurgy; Fabrication, metallography, and conservation of the Japanese Sword. Professor Michael Notis, Lehigh professor emeritus of material science and engineering, is a samurai sword expert.
Prof. Notis, at age 81, is still active in the vibrant Jewish community of Lehigh Valley, NY.
