Osgood J. Whittemore, Jr (1919 - 2010, USA) was born on January 24, 1919, in Washington, USA. He got his B.S. in Ceramic Engineering from Iowa State University (ISU) in 1940, continued his education at the University of Washington where he obtained an M. Sc. in 1941.
In 1950 he came back to Iowa State University, this time as a professor where he stayed until 1964. After Iowa State, he started teaching Mineral Engineering at the University of Washington, first as an Associate professor, and as of 1969 as a Full professor of Ceramic Engineering.
Prof. Whittemore developed long-term academic careers at Washington University (1964-1987). His research area was ceramic processing, which grew in importance in the Department. He spent some time in Brasil on sabbatical in 1976 to help establish a new ceramic engineering program. Using his sabbatical as a base for interactions, Professor Whittemore developed a continuing set of NSF sponsored collaborative programs for the study of sintering with Drs J. Castro and J. Varela from Brasil. These studies helped to establish the scientific basis for the sintering of ceramic particles. In 1987 O.J. Whittemore retired as Professor Emeritus and he continued his relationship with the field in research and consulting.
Professor Osgood became a member of the American Ceramic Society in 1960 and a Full Member of the International Institute for the Science of Sintering in 1985.
He died on July 20, 2010 in Kirkland, Washington.
