Prof. VALERIY V. SKOROKHOD was born on July 28, 1934, in Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk (now Dnipro) region, in a family of school teachers. In 1956 he graduated with honor from the Metallurgical Faculty of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (now NTUU "Igor Sikorsky KPI") and began working at the Institute of Metal Ceramics and Special Alloys, which was reorganized into the Frantsevich Institute of Materials Science of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 1966 he founded and managed all his life the Department of “Sintering Physics and Structure Formation in Powder Materials Technology”. Since 2001 he was a director of the Frantsevich Institute of Problems of Materials Science of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Dr. Valeriy V. Skorokhod is a worldwide known scientist for his works in the field of theoretical materials science, who has developed the foundation of sintering and scientific substantiation for engineering methods of controlled powder metallurgy processes. Dr. Skorokhod was consistent in creating the continuum theory of sintering: from the mean-field theory he determined the dependencies on porosity for most properties of a powder body and only then obtained a rheological equation linking these properties and porosity. Using the hydrodynamic analogy of the linear theory of elasticity in the theory of viscous deformation of porous bodies, Dr. Skorokhod has derived general differential equations for the kinetics of densification and shape change of porous bodies in a homogeneous stress state. This equation is now widely used in the world to model the modern sintering processes. He has developed a method of the self-consistent, quasi-homogeneous field for statistical mixtures that allows calculation of the elastic modulus, permittivity, viscosity, and other effective properties of multiphase inhomogeneous and porous materials.

One of the fundamental areas of scientific activity of Dr. Skorokhod is the study of sintering as a structure-forming process, the development of defining technological principles of end-to-end control of the structure, and physical and mechanical properties of the sintered materials. This ideology of "structural engineering" takes into account the impact of the entire hierarchy of the structure at the micro-, meso- and macro-levels on the properties of the material. He proposed a description of porous structure using the matrix coefficients, the dependences of some physical and mechanical properties on the matrix of the pore space. Now, this is a working tool for materials technologists in planning the structure, technology, and properties of the materials being developed. Under the leadership of Dr. Skorokhod a theory of rapid -rate and non-isothermal sintering of nanodispersed systems has been proposed for the creation of nanocomposite ceramic materials.

In the early 80's Dr. Skorokhod contributed to the field of powder materials science of intermetallic compounds with special properties of shape memory and reversible hydrogenation. Economical and efficient powder porous-composite intermetallic hydrogen sorbents have been developed and a nickel-Me and hydride battery has been created, which is superior in properties as compared to nickel-cadmium batteries.

Distinguished scientist in the field of materials science and powder metallurgy Dr.Skorokhod has been elected Full Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1990. Dr. Skorokhod has created a scientific school, the work of which is the foundation of the modern development of technologies for powder materials. He was an adviser of 12 habilitation doctors and supervisor for 30 PhDs.

He is an author of more than 600 scientific papers, including 10 monographs, 34 copyright certificates and patents. For a long time, Dr. Skorokhod was the editor-in-chief of the journal "Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics", a member of the editorial board of the International Journal on Science of Sintering, Editor-in-chief of the "Encyclopedia of Inorganic materials".

He was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine (1987), with the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise V (2003) and IV (2008) degrees, with the Nikola Tesla medal of the Nikola Tesla Foundation, Belgrade(1998)), Vernadsky Gold Medal by NAS of Ukraine (2017), with the Ya.I. Frenkel International Prize (1998), Frantsevich award of the NAS of Ukraine (1991), Dobrokhotov award of NAS of Ukraine (2010). Dr. Skorokhod was a Full Member of the International Institute of Sintering at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1981), an honorary member of the Polish Ceramic Society and a foreign member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1997). Since 2005 he was a President of the Ukrainian Materials Research Society.VALERIY V. SKOROKHOD, the distinguished materials scientist and foundator has died on July 1, 2017
