Prof. Viktor Ivanovich Trefilov was born in Baku on August 6, 1930. He graduated from Kiev Polytechnic Institute in 1952, specialty "Physical metallurgy and heat treatment of steel". He was the specialist in physics and physics of materials, organizer of science, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1973), academician of the USSR (1987), Honored Scientist of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of the USSR (1988) and the USSR (1974) in the field of science and technology.
From 1955 to 1968 V. I. Trefilov worked at the Institute of Metal Physics, where he gradually moved from the research assistant to the deputy director. In 1969 he headed the Institute for the Problem of Material Science, National Academy of Kiev, Ukraine, which soon became one of the largest and most recognized centers in the world in this field of Materials Science.
The range of basic and applied research V.I. Trefilov covered a number of the most important areas of modern materials. He created the physical foundations of the theory of strength and ductility of synthetic and natural materials of various applications. He is the author of the theory of strain hardening and fracture of polycrystalline metallic materials and the founder of the scientific school and received well-deserved international recognition. Fundamental research of V.I. Trefilov became the basis for the development of the original complex electro steel processing technologies, which provided a record high combination of strength with ductility, the creation of production technology highly durable steel armor. Under his direction, the technology of the production so-called viscous ceramic and diamond-like materials, the consolidation by explosive compaction process of sintering of diamond-like ceramics were developed.
Victor I. Trefilov paid much attention to the creative growth of promising young scientists and in this regard, the post-graduate scholarship is named after him.
Professor Victor Trefilov passed away on April 14, 2001, in Kiev, Ukraine.
