Prof. Richard Todd began his academic studies with a Scholarship to Cambridge University, UK (BA(Hons), Natural Science, 1984). On graduating he worked on the development of electronic interconnection for VLSI technology at GEC-Marconi Research Ltd. He later returned to academia with a Senior Scholarship at Oxford University (DPhil in 1990). Following a Research Fellowship at Oxford and a tenured position at Manchester University, he returned to Oxford in 1999, becoming Professor in 2010.
Todd has previously been the Director of the Oxford Centre for Advanced Materials and Composites (2004-2008) and has been the Senior Editor of The Journal of the European Ceramic Society since 2011. He has co-organised 12 major conferences and symposia and has served as the Chairman of the International Advisory Board to the ICSAM international conference series on superplasticity.
His research interests revolve around the processing and mechanical behaviour of ceramics and he has over 130 publications in these areas. He won the Pfeil Award of the Institute of Materials for published work in ceramics (2001) and the 2012 Verulam Medal and Prize in 2012 for distinguished contributions to ceramics. He was elected a Fellow of ECerS in 2013 and won the 2019 Stuijts Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to ceramic science. Professor Todd has given over 90 plenary, keynote and invited talks, mostly at international conferences.
